Introduction

The Pegaso 5031-L is an elegant coach measuring 12 metres long and 2.5 metres wide, which entered service in 1969.

Its exceptionally comfortable seats and technical characteristics make it particularly well suited to long-distance journeys.

Vehicle condition

After withdrawal, the vehicle passed to collector Francesc López. He transferred the coach to ARCA in September 2009.

The vehicle is mechanically operational, although technical problems currently prevent it from being driven on public roads.

History

This elegant coach is a Pegaso 5031-L with Ayats bodywork. It began service with F. Canals as fleet number 9 and later passed to Canals Transport de Viatgers, owned by one of the brothers behind the former company. There it had the distinction of carrying fleet number 1.

The Pegaso 5031-L was designed especially for long-distance travel. Its vertically mounted rear engine makes full use of the passenger compartment while reducing noise and vibration, and its 200 hp output provides good performance.

Its six-speed ZF gearbox is coupled to a hydraulically operated, pneumatically assisted clutch, offering the driver a relatively comfortable working environment. The steering is also hydraulically assisted. Two pneumatic braking circuits serve the two axles, while an engine brake improves ride smoothness and fuel economy.

The Ayats bodywork is both attractive and practical. Its outward-opening doors are particularly noteworthy: the front door is pneumatically operated and the rear door is manual.

After withdrawal from service, the coach was acquired by Girona collector Francesc López, who transferred it to ARCA in September 2009. The intention was to provide the association with a comfortable vehicle for long-distance journeys, and it did so. Mechanical problems later emerged in the half-shaft and differential assembly, however, while the interior seats deteriorated rapidly and now require urgent reupholstering.
