Introduction
The Pegaso 5023-CL has 40 seats and a 185 hp engine. The Autonomous University of Barcelona acquired it in 1975 for the shuttle between railway stations and the university campus, which explains its original Spanish Government Vehicle Fleet registration.
Its high seating capacity made it particularly suitable for carrying large numbers of students between the faculties and railway stations.
Vehicle condition
The bus spent its entire working life on the campus service, apart from duties during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
It was withdrawn in 2003 and remained at the UAB depot until 2006, when the university donated it to ARCA.
ARCA restored the bus in 2008 and operated it until 2012, when it was withdrawn for more extensive structural work. It remains out of service pending that restoration, future bodywork repairs and repainting.

History
As its facilities expanded, the Autonomous University of Barcelona purchased six new Pegaso 5023-CL buses in 1975 for the shuttle between railway stations and the faculties. They became fleet numbers 21 to 26. Their most distinctive feature was dual registration: Spanish Government Vehicle Fleet plates, PMM-xxxxx, and ordinary B-xxxx-AW registrations. The latter were never used except on number 21.
They replaced six former Transports de Barcelona Chausson buses then approaching twenty years of age. When the FGC railway reached the centre of the campus in the mid-1980s, the shuttle was reduced to the RENFE station at Cerdanyola. Continued growth in faculties and congestion at campus entrances nevertheless required frequent reinforcement. Between the late 1980s and 1992, up to fourteen higher-capacity ex-TB Pegaso 6035-A articulated buses arrived, progressively relegating series 21–26 to reserve and then withdrawal. This coincided with the railway extension nearer the campus and the purchase of former TMB Pegaso 6420 buses in the early 1990s. Only number 21 remained operational on its B-AW registration for promotional services away from the UAB.
From withdrawal in 2003 until 2006, four members of the series remained at the UAB depot: 21, used occasionally, and 23, 25 and 26. Number 21 is now preserved by the university, number 23 by the AAAC association in Madrid and number 25 by ARCA. The donations required the vehicles to be restored in the university’s original colours and logos.
After intensive restoration, number 25 was repainted in April 2008 and regained its original UAB appearance. Around 2012 it was withdrawn for deeper structural work, which remains outstanding.
