Pegaso 6038

The Pegaso 6038 was widely used by Spanish bus fleets. It was built as a self-supporting vehicle at the Jorsa factory in Mataró, Catalonia, before one of several coachbuilders around Spain completed the outer panels, interior, windows and equipment.

This vehicle operated with Burgos urban buses, SMAUB, from 1985 until 2006. It then passed to Borriana Town Council and supported municipal activities until 2011.

Borriana Town Council transferred the vehicle to ARCA in 2011. Following body, paint and mechanical work, it was repainted to reproduce the red-and-cream appearance of the first Pegaso 6038 prototype tested in Barcelona.

It is now fully operational and regularly participates in ARCA activities.

The Pegaso 6038 was the most widespread urban bus used in Spanish fleet renewal programmes during the 1980s. Its design combined the mechanical concept of the Pegaso 6035 with the interior and exterior design of the Pegaso 6050. Both used self-supporting bodywork within the Monotral structural concept developed under Viberti licence.

Jorsa in Mataró built the Pegaso 6038 as a functional but semi-finished self-supporting vehicle. One of the many Spanish coachbuilders associated with the model then completed its outer and inner panelling, windows and equipment.

Carrocerías Ugarte of Logroño bodied this vehicle in 1985. It was fitted with three doors and very few seats; the remaining specifications matched contemporary buses bodied for Madrid’s EMT fleet.

The bus spent its entire active working life, from 1985 to 2006, with Burgos Urban Buses as fleet number 70. Burgos Town Council then transferred it to Borriana Town Council, which used it for municipal activities between 2006 and 2011. When that use ended, Borriana transferred it to ARCA for preservation.

Its current appearance reproduces the first Pegaso 6038 prototype, fleet number 6000, tested in Barcelona in 1980. That prototype helped lead to large-scale orders from the urban fleets of Spain’s principal cities.
