Introduction
The Pegaso 6420 is a self-supporting urban bus with a 200 hp engine and capacity for 31 passengers. Development began in 1985.
Its bodywork was adapted from the MAN SL200, a vehicle designed to the German VÖV standard and widely used in Germany. The Spanish adaptation resulted from the beginning of cooperation between ENASA and MAN in anticipation of a possible German takeover of the Spanish company, which ultimately did not take place.
Vehicle condition
The vehicle spent its working life in the Burgos urban bus fleet. It was withdrawn in 2007 and transferred in 2010 to ARCA members José María Martínez, José Burgos and Josep Pretel, known as Team JJJ.
Under Team JJJ’s care it received extensive body and paint repairs and a mechanical overhaul. It is now fully operational.
History
In the early 1980s, Pegaso entered a technical cooperation agreement with MAN in anticipation of a possible German purchase of the Spanish manufacturer. The agreement gave Pegaso engineers access to the successful MAN SL200 range, built around the unified VÖV body concept with a strong and lightweight monocoque structure.
The self-supporting body was retained, while a Pegaso axle and a horizontally mounted rear Pegaso 96A4AZ engine producing 200 hp were adapted for propulsion, in a layout similar to the Pegaso 6050. The rear engine allowed a comparatively low passenger floor.
The vehicle entered service in July 1987 with Burgos Municipal Urban Buses, SMAUB, as fleet number 77. SMAUB operated two Pegaso 6420 vehicles, numbers 77 and 78.
It worked on various routes for twenty years. In 2007 it was withdrawn as the urban fleet underwent modernisation. Number 77 remained at the depot alongside other retired company vehicles intended for donation to humanitarian and support organisations.
In 2010 it was transferred for preservation to ARCA members José María Martínez Ocón, José Burgos and Josep Pretel.
The bodywork and paint were comprehensively restored in the livery carried by the first example when Pegaso presented the model. Years of inactivity also made a mechanical overhaul necessary.
