Replacing the old carpet
Last November 2018 we started replacing part of the Monotral’s pavement, concretely the area in the articulated section, which was in a bad state. We started taking off metal joints surrounding the carpet.
- Works concentrate in the articulated section
- This is how our moquette looked: bubbles and cracks caused by both age and usage
- Drilling the rivets and taking off metal joints
Once aluminium profiles were removed, we started tearing off the old carpet, a laborious task because of both the impact glue and the nails that were added in various areas in order to flatten the bubbles appearing every now and then during service.
- La goma resseca un cop ja treta.
- Desmuntant la goma del articulat: van caler rasqueta, cutter i bones dosis de suor…
- Once the old moquette is stripped off the wooden base becomes visible. Some sanding to correct irregularities will be necessary
The wooden base was in a relatively good state if we take into account that it is almost 40 years old. The irregular surfaces were softened with a special putty meant for wood.
- José Burgos and Lluís Cuesta filled the cracks in the wood.
- Once caulked it is left to dry, and as a final step the surface will be polished
A pattern of the new carpet would be created by means of carboard from old cardboard boxes, conveniently fitted in the space occupied by the old one.
- Old cardboard boxes will provide the prime material for the pattern
- The cardboard is carefully fitted where the old carpet was
- The final pattern is put over the new carpet and its remainder is cut out
